Message from the Chapter President

The Chapter is gearing up for our annual membership meeting this spring (targeting April). We bring this up now because this year we have several leadership positions up for election or re-election. Please let us know If you are interested in serving on the Chapter leadership team as an officer, director, or volunteer by sending an email to president and vicepresident.
Additionally, we are looking to finalize updates to the Chapter bylaws to better support members and growth. Specifically, the revisions address a) adopting the ISC2 template, b) resolving contradictions and ambiguous statements, c) removing “hard-coded” limitations (e.g., four named chapter officers that no longer serve), and d) continuity of leadership roles and responsibilities (e.g., staggering the election cycles). The draft will be made available for members to review and provide comments prior to vote at the membership meeting.

Navigating QR Codes Safely: A Cybersecurity Perspective

In today's digital landscape, QR codes have become ubiquitous, offering a convenient way to access information and services. However, it's crucial to exercise caution when using QR codes, as malicious actors may leverage them to compromise your cybersecurity.

Mitigating Risks: Strategies for QR Code Safety

  • Scrutinize the Source: Approach QR codes with skepticism, particularly those encountered in public spaces or unsolicited emails. Verify the legitimacy of the source before scanning the code.
  • Inspect the URL: Before scanning, examine the destination URL. Look for anomalies such as misspellings, unfamiliar domains, or suspicious characters. Ensure the URL matches the intended destination. The QR code in this newsletter has the URL in the image. Use this as a way to show family and friends how to verify URL
  • Leverage a QR Code Scanner App: Employ a reputable QR code scanner app that provides additional security features. These apps often offer URL scanning capabilities, alerting you to potential threats before you scan the code.
  • Remain Vigilant: Stay informed about QR code scams and malicious code trends. Regularly update your devices' security software and operating systems to protect against evolving threats.

Remember, knowledge is power! Educate yourself and others about QR code safety. Share this info with your friends and family to keep them safe too.
